(2) Purchase a stand-alone device (I think Sony makes one) where you plug the tape in one end, the DVD in the other, and "hey presto" out comes a recorded DVD

(1) Somehow plug your VHS player into the back of your computer, using a $30 USB connector or two My Google research seems to indicate that there are different ways to convert VHS tapes to DVD: They've grown tired of the Great Steenbeck Project. (Considering the original media consisted of 8mm films made up to 75 years ago.)

The plan was to edit the answer print on a Steenbeck then do a neg cut, and produce a colour balanced 16mm print.īut of course I never had the time to do this.Īt the time that the conversion was made we also had a VHS copy made - it was done in the pro lab, and the quality is good.

Some years ago I paid to have them all converted - using the "wet gate" process (I wonder if that's related to Avid Liquid?) - to 16mm neg, and had an answer print made. We have lots and lots of old "family" movies (about 30 hours) on 8mm, super 8mm, and 16mm. But the archival posting was a couple of years old, and the way technology changes. I've also searched this forum and found a useful thread in the Avid Liquid archive, whatever Liquid is. I've done the usual Google search for information and - as is often the case with Google searches - ended up more confused at the end than I was when I started. In the meantime I have a very basic question about the best way to convert VHS tapes to digital files (and DVD's). Waiting to find the time to take the course, etc. I have Media Composer which (I confess) I haven't used yet.
